OVERVIEW: The Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science (RIACS) is a division of the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) and is located in Mountain View, California.
The Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science wanted to mark its 25th Anniversary by reflecting on its past while looking towards the future.
The Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science (RIACS) was founded as a joint collaboration between USRA and NASA's Ames Research Center for the purpose of advancing the state-of-the-art in supercomputing, intelligent systems, and human-machine interaction.
During its 25 year history, RIACS has been home to some of the world's foremost experts in computer science and artificial intelligence technologies. Working with NASA, they achieved a number of firsts: In 1998 / 1999, Remote Agent became the first AI software to control a spacecraft; In 2003, a follow on application named Europa / MAPGEN became the first AI software to plan the work of robots on another planet during the Mars Exploration Rover mission; and in 2005 the Clarissa / Regulus software developed at RIACS became the first spoken dialog system used in space.
RIACS engaged TCG Creative to ideate on how they could commemorate the organizations 25th anniversary. They wanted a unique visual identity that also integrated with their current branding, yet spoke to the high-tech and academic nature of their work. Additionally, they also wanted to engage previous employees, many of whom contributed greatly to the current success of the organization.
To do this, TCG Creative conducted a series of interviews with then current and past employees, and from these interviews develop a History of Innovation timeline as well as a 16 page historical booklet documenting the organization's research achievements. In addition, TCG Creative also developed an interactive web site which provided greater detail on the organization's rich research history.
